The guiding question for my analysis on “The Handmaids Tale” will be: What is the significance of the color red to this story and to author Margaret Atwood? Because there is so much emphasis on red, it obviously deems important and it is intriguing to me.

Atwood puts so much attention on red and I want to further understand why. Looking at the cultural aspects, Atwood’s biography, and the colors overall significance will give me perspective and will hopefully answer my question. I’ve always had an affinity towards this color so it grabs me on a personal level which adds inertia to my interest.

I will use other colors regularly mentioned in the story for contrast. While red is the main topic I am focusing on, I will need to bring other opposing elements in to further enhance its purpose in this writing. Red is the color of blood, power, love, and sexuality. The women and men in “the Handmaids Tale” are all involved in a world ruled by these forces.

This was the first cover done for “The Handmaids Tale”:
